Steve Lonegan for Governor

Issues - The Economy

New Jersey was once ranked one of the best states in the Country in which to own a business, and, as a result, the state and its people saw a time of unparalleled prosperity. The bridge over the Delaware River, between Trenton and Morrisville, Pennsylvania, bears the slogan: “Trenton Makes, The World Takes.” That slogan was adopted in the early 1900s to let the world know that Trenton, as well as the rest of New Jersey, was a manufacturing powerhouse, a place that attracted businesses and people.

Now that bridge and its slogan have become merely a reminder of our states former prosperity and brilliance. We have seen the state move on a much more unfortunate path. The growth of state government, the rise in taxation, and the ever increasingly burdensome regulations placed upon businesses over the past 8 years have forced our state to devolve into the worst state in which to own a business. As a result of these failed policies, New Jersey has seen the lowest rate of job growth and the highest outward migration of businesses and jobs of all states.

Over the past several years we have seen exponential growth in government, but government is not the answer to our current economic problems; in fact, government is the problem.

While New Jersey’s economic decline did not take place over night, bringing it back to the height of prosperity can be achieved in relatively short order. As your governor, I will implement a proven plan that will revitalize our state’s economy and bring businesses and people back to New Jersey. This plan will include cutting our state government by no less than 20%, cutting taxes (including the personal and corporate income taxes), cutting regulations and burdensome bureaucracies, and allowing the free market to work without the unnatural interference of a heavy-handed government.

Soon after my election, New Jersey will once again be a state of “Liberty and Prosperity”.
